I had a madcatz memory card (infact still have it) that would occasionally tell me that it was corrupted and it needed to be formatted, but then I would turn off the GC wait for about a minute and turn the GC back on and it would work perfectly. But that doesn't sound like the problem you're having.
You'll have to format the memory on it.
Let me guess: it was third party?

I've seen a few at Walmart, just the other day. I've been planning on getting a second one myslef because I usually go play with friends at church and they've got good games but they don't have a memory card so I always have to bring mine. It was only $10 dollars if I remeber correctly.
Yeah, I had two 3rd parties and they both got corrupted on me. My 'Official Nintendo Product' has been great. I was super lucky and got one from target on clearance last year.If you buy used, spend the extra money and get the nintendo brand.
