For lightgun games, how does the wiimote know exactly how far to move the cursor.example 1 (cursor is centred)i am standing 3m away from a 32'' screen, and (whilst keeping the butt stationary) I move the other end 1 inch left, which should place the cursor to halfway between the middle and the left edge of the screenexample 2 (cursor is centred)i am standing 2m away from a 32'' screen, and (whilst keeping the butt stationary) I move the other end 1 inch left, which should place the cursor to the left edge of the screen(or thereabouts - I've not done trigonometry for a while ;-) )My question is, if the wiimote doesn't now how far away it is, it cannot know how far to move the cursor. Can it? I noticed this in Link's Crossbow training on the calibration setting - I got it dead on, but straight away it was off again. Its ok when the cursor is on screen, but surely the whole point of light gun games is to do it without the cursor??Wiimote tracking (lightgun)
The Wiimote is not a light gun.
If you want to play something where you can calibrate well, try House of the Dead 2 %26 3.
Wiimote tracking (lightgun)
The pointer basically works as such: At each end of the sensor bar there is a set of IR lights. At the top of the Wiimote is a simple infrared camera. The camera picks up the two points and then flips the image around to determine where the pointer is supposed to be. Some games might also estimate the distance by measuring how far apart each IR point is. Though calibration would still be necessary, since by itself the Wiimote cannot know the exact size or shape of your TV.

Yes, but that alone doesn't tell it how far the bar is from the TV, or how big the TV is. You need these additional variables to make the pointer as close to 1:1 as possible.
between the brightness/size of the lights and the distance between the lights
Most developers don't seem to want to go to the trouble of fully calibrating the Wii remote. Zelda TP lets you tweak things to take into account the size of your TV, but no other game I have does.
